Hair Loss and Hair Restoration

Hair loss is extremely difficult and the cause of significant anxiety and self-consciousness for men and women. Some people begin to lose hair as early as their twenties. Heredity and hormones are the major cause of hair loss for men and women. Accidents, burns and certain disease can trigger hair loss as well.

Dr. Schmid is an expert in the most advanced hair restoration techniques available today. From surgical transplantation to prescription therapy, Dr. Schmid will find the treatment that is right for you.

Considered the gold standard, Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation (FUHT) is a process by which small bundles of one to five hairs, their supportive tissue and muscle (follicular units) are taken from a dense donor site. The donor sight is carefully chosen so that incisions are concealed. Follicular units are then transplanted in natural looking, feathered patterns into receding areas.

Hair re-growth begins 8 to 12 weeks after surgery, but it doesn’t grow all at once. Each hair is genetically programmed to grow in cycles, so you will only see about a quarter of the grafts grow in the first few months. New growth cycles continue until about the tenth postoperative month. Depending upon the extent of grafting desired, hair can be implanted in one session or a multiple sessions, generally spacing each session about 8 to 12 months apart.

Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation requires only local/twilight sedation and little downtime. Patients describe minimal to moderate discomfort. Dr. Schmid performs hair restoration in his state-of-the-art hair transplantation suite.

As with any cosmetic procedure, recovery times vary with the extent of surgery, the attention the patient pays to post-operative care and follow-up, and patient's genetic healing abilities. Approximate recovery time is about ten days to two weeks.

Laser Hair Removal

An affordable and effective procedure, laser hair removal has quickly become one of the most common laser applications for men and women. The laser works by controlled flashes of light that are selectively absorbed by hair follicles deep within the skin. Without damaging surrounding tissue, the hair follicles are damaged or destroyed thus limiting the potential for re-growth of hair in that follicle.

Our Vasculight HR Intense-Pulsed Light System is FDA approved for the treatment of unwanted hair on all skin types, including darker skinned individuals, and can be used on the face and body. Laser hair removal works best on pigmented hair. Because all hair on the face and body grows in different cycles, 3 to 5 treatments are recommended for optimal hair reduction. Treatments should be staged in conjunction with the growth cycles of the hair. Side effects are very rare. After the procedure your skin may be red, but this subsides. You should be able to resume your normal activities promptly.

A topical numbing cream may be prescribed to ease any discomfort, and a chilled gel keeps the skin cool throughout the procedure. The length of your procedure will vary with the area you desire to treat. Some patients describe the sensation of the laser pulse as a pinch or the snap of a small rubber band. There are no significant changes in your activity level after your procedure; however you must avoid sun exposure to the treated areas.
